JPEG file comment | TIHANYI Lajos
TIHANYI, Lajos (1885, Budapest - 1938, Paris) View of a Street at Nagybánya 1908 Oil on canvas, 70 x 70 cm Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest The younger generation of the artists working in Nagybánya around 1905 were influenced by the new French trends, especially by Fauvism. They were often referred to as the "Hungarian Fauves" or "Neos" (Neo-Impressionists). Lajos Tihanyi also belonged to this circle. His "View of a Street in Nagybánya", painted in 1908, shows a part of the town which had been depicted before many times. What makes this painting especially interesting is the fact that this well-known motif is now rendered in a new style. The painting is an excellent example of the way one division of Hungarian avant-garde branched off from "plein air" painting. Later Tihanyi joined the circle called The Eight and the Activist movement. Type: landscape Time-line: 1901-1925 Form: painting |
