Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Tigh Geal in Barrapol A double chimney version of this style of traditional house. Thatched with marram over turf, and held down by chicken wire weighted with bricks. (Chicken wire used nowadays rather than a complex roping system) The chimneys are designed to lean slightly outwards in case of collapse as they are unsupported. The hipped roofs are a Tiree speciality. The walls are 5 feet thick and are double skinned with rubble cored to make them windproof. The design is encourage the wind to seep over the house. Peat shortage on Tiree led to the disappearance of the centre fireplace tigh dubh.
