ed with the portions of Thor-eaus journal published in the eighties by his friend,Mr. H. G. O. Blake; and the reading of these, withtheir vivid delineation of characteristic New Eng-land scenes, sacredly cherished in memory, arouseda passionate longing to visit the region so intimatelydescribed by Thoreau and enjoy a ramble amonghis beloved haunts. But this was only thebeginning. During the fifteen years succeeding, thewriter has made frequent pilgrimages to Concord, under all conditions of season and weather, searchingout places and objects described by Thoreau, tread-ing in his footsteps so far as they were discoverable, and bringing back photographs of all that was mostinteresting.^ Out of many hundred views thus taken ^ Lest any should assume that the fondness for New England scenery

First of all, they were self-rewarding, entirelyapart from their historical or personal interest. Abreezy walk over Concord meadows or uplands farexceeds in exhilaration and inspiration any after-noon upon a golf course or any conceivable trip ina motor-car. Confirmation was found again and again of Thor-eaus descriptive accuracy. Certain flowers, for exam-ple, were traced unerringly merely from his journalnotes. Confirmation, likewise, of the thoroughness of hisobservations in the field was frequently noted. Re-peatedly upon these rambles some scene or objectwas photographed simply because it seemed to pos-sess exceptional interest, without reference to anyrelation which it might have to Thoreau, and thenafterwards it was found that the identical scene orobject was carefully described in his journal.
