ng! cried Twee-dledum. The first thing in a visitis to say, How d ye do? and shake , f( THROUGH THE LOOKING-GLASS hands! And here the two brothersgave each other a hug, and then theyheld out the two hands that were free,to shake hands with her. Alice did not like shaking handswith either of them first, for fear ofhurting the other ones feelings; so,as the best way out of the difficulty, she took hold of both hands at once;the next moment they were dancinground in a ring. This seemed quitenatural (she remembered afterwards),and she was not even surprised to hearmusic playing; it seemed to come fromthe tree under which they were dancing, and it was done (as well as she couldmake it out) by the branches rubbingone across the other, like fiddles andfiddle-sticks. But it certainty was funny (Alicesaid afterwards, when she was tellingher sister the history of all this), tofind myself singing, Here we go round the mulberry bush. I dont know when 66 >*s^ Hs* 3o 3(%*tft Q- 3 5crq o c I p DCTQ

TWEEDLEDUM AND TWEEDLEDEE I began it, but somehow I felt as if Idbeen singing it a long, long time! The other two dancers were fat, andvery soon out of breath. Four timesround is enough for one dance, Twee-dledum panted out, and they left offdancing as suddenly as they had be-gun; the music stopped at the samemoment. Then they let go of Alices handsand stood looking at her for a minute;there was a rather awkward pause, asAlice didnt know how to begin a con-versation with people she had justbeen dancing with. It would neverdo to say How d ye do? now, shesaid to herself; we seem to have gotbeyond that, somehow! I hope youre not much tired? shesaid at last. Nohow. And thank you very muchfor asking, said Tweedledum. So much obliged! added Tweedle- dee. You like poetry? 67 1
