If only her petals curled up alittle more, shed be all riojlit. 30 THE GARDEN OF Alice didnt like being criticized, so shebegan asking questions. Arent you sometimesfrightened at being planted out here, with no-body to take care of you ? Theres the tree in the middle, said theRose. What else is it good for ? But what could it do, if any dangercame ? Alice asked. It could bark, said the Rose. 1 It says Bough-wough ! cried a Daisy. Thats why its branches are called boughs ! Didnt you know that? cried anotherDaisy. And here they all began shouting together,till the air seemed quite full of little shrillvoices. Silence, every one of you! criedthe Tiger-lily, waving itself passionately fromside to side, and trembling with excitement,They know I cant get at them! it panted,bending its quivering head towards Alice, orthey wouldnt dare to do it! Never mind! Alice said in a soothing o tone, and, stooping down to the daisies, who LIVE FLOWE
