as a finish that, early in the session of the Senate, in 1869,after a long series of Summer sittings, Senator Hales Com-mittee of Investigation of alleged bribery and corruptionattributed to members of the preceding Legislature re-ported not proven. They discovered considerable smoke,but no fire. It was said that the Committee attempted toascertain what consideration the then Governor, Fenton,received for his signature to the Erie Bill of that session; 146 THIRTY YEAES OF NEW YORK POLITICS. but tlie Erie Railwaj people declined to answer, on tlieplea that the resolution under which the Committee acteddid not call for that information. It was also asserted thatwhen ex- Senator Thomas Murphy was on the witness standhe stated that, upon applying to Jay Gould for a contribu-tion to the Republican State Committee, Gould declined,upon the ground that he had already contributed $20,000for Governor Fentons expenses. This portion of theevidence, however, did not appear in Senator Hales report.
