Falling to Eaeth Like a Blazing Meteor. This stirring picture represents a German aeroplane of the type calledAviatik, beaten in a fight high up in the air by the famous French AviatorGarros, plunging to earth in flames, turning and turning like a falling star. HARROWING SCENES It appeared to me an odd thing that we were still alive. Then we came into Dixmude. When I saw it for the first and last time it was aplace of death and horror. The streets through whichwe passed were utterly deserted and wrecked fromend to end, as though by an earthquake. Incessantexplosions of shell fire crashed down upon the wallswhich still stood. Great gashes opened in the walls, which then toppled and fell. A roof came tumblingdown with an appalling clatter. Like a house of cardsblown by a puff of wind, a little shop suddenly collapsedinto a mass of ruins. Here and there, further into thetown, we saw living figures. They ran swiftly for amoment and then disappeared into dark caverns undertoppling porticoes.
