occasions, at hiswigwam. The whole village is now in commotion.Provisions, household goods, and clothing are bundledtogether; dogs and horses are yoked to burdens twicetheir own size; children are slung in sacks, and placedon their mothers backs; and each one is speedilyloaded with the burden, never a very inconsiderableone, which he is to bear to the new settlement. Theusual order of arrangement is as follows:—The polesof a lodge are divided into two bunches. The littleends of each bunch are fastened upon the shouldersof a horse, leaving the other ends to drag upon theground on each side. Behind the horse a cross-piececonnects the bunches and keeps them in their place. On the bunches are placed the lodge or tent rolled up,sundry huge articles of household stuffs, and three orfour women and children. Inthis manner, five or six hundred wigwams, with alltheir furniture, are moved many miles at once. Thecavalcade is drawn out to an immense distance, themen mounted on good horses, numbering more thana thousand, and the number of canine assistants atleast five times that number. Each dog has to bearpart of the general burden. Two poles about fifteenfeet long are placed upon his shoulders, in the samemanner as the lodge poles are attached to the horses, leaving the larger ends to drag upon the ground be-hind him. On these is placed a bundle, with whichhe trots off, keeping up with the caravan until night, and only stopping when there seems prospect of abattle with some of his companions. There is a little stream which runs into that mostbeautiful of all rivers, the noble Hudson, that stillbears the name of the Murder
