| Description |
three hearts, Tricardia watsonii, California, White Mountains, Busher Creek, Juniper Mountain, Fishlake Valley drainage, elevation 1826 m (5990 ft). This distinctive perennial cousin of Phacelia is the only species in its genus, and is always a favorite to stumble across. It is named for the three heart-shaped outer calyx lobes that expand to enclose the fruits. It tends to emerge only after wet winters, which means it always has lots of good company. Even in wet years, it is found mostly in sheltered or moisture-retaining places like canyon bottoms, north facing rocky slopes, under shrubs, or all of the above. Three hearts is found in the southern Great Basin desert as far north as central Nevada, the Mojave Desert, and immediately adjacent areas of southeast California, northwest Arizona, and southwest Utah, below about 2300 meters (7500 feet) elevation. Like so many other species of the region, it reaches that high-elevation limit here in the White Mountains. |
