Summary

[edit]
Description

Mazza Gallerie interior mall (early 1990s), Chevy Chase Pavilion street retail podium for a clunky office building (early 2000s), Shops at Wisconsin Place street retail along a detailed plaza (early 2010s).

Friendship Heights, DC/Md., although only the leftmost building is in Maryland.

For a great little illustration in the vagaries of Census geography -- and why you can't strictly rely on it to define terms like "city" and "suburb" -- the four-block, 34-acre Census Designated Place (and incorporated tax district) of Friendship Heights Village is also behind the building at left. Since it's just a cluster of mostly residential high rises, it's the single most densely populated "place" in the entire country, with 79,556 residents per square mile. Even Manhattan only clocks in at 69,468 per square mile. Montgomery County's incorporated places really follow no rhyme or reason: there are eight Chevy Chases (like the seven Barringtons or the five Grosse Pointes; America's wealthy prefer micro-management), none larger than half a square mile (and five smaller than a tenth of a square mile, with absurd names like "Section Three") whereas the county's two most urbanized areas never got around to incorporating.
