Summary

Description

1880s postcard of Briggate, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. Thornton's Arcade is top centre.

Note the soot-blackened buildings, the hansom cabs waiting in the centre, and the horse-drawn tram. Two boys aged 10-12 years stand bottom right, one wearing an apron. Boys left school for employment at 14 years of age after the board schools opened, but many were still employed from a younger age. There are more men than women in the street, and shoppers are in their best clothes.
