Summary

[edit]
Description

The original ancient church of St James in Thornton (known locally as the old "Bell Chapel") was built between the years 1587 and 1612.

The "modern" Church of St James had its foundation stone laid on 21st August 1872, and was completed several years later.

On completion of the new church, the old Bell Chapel fell into immediate disuse. Very little of the original building remains, but the cupola is still intact in the graveyard site opposite the new church.
