[edit]DescriptionThorberArms.png |
English: Arms of Thorber of Devon: Per pale argent and gules, on a chevron azure three cross-crosslets or (Source: Adams, Maxwell, Some Notes on the Churches and manors of East and West Ogwell, published in Report and Transactions of the Devonshire Association, Vol.32 (Vol.2, second series), Plymouth, 1900, p.232[1][2] amended from three cross-crosslets botonée or, botonée not shown in stained glass in East Ogwell Church). However Pole gives the arms of "Thorber of Malston" as: Azure, on a fess engrailed argent three fusils gules (Vivian, Lt.Col. J.L., (Ed.) The Visitations of the County of Devon: Comprising the Heralds' Visitations of 1531, 1564 & 1620, Exeter, 1895, p.504), which Maxwell gives as the arms of Stighull. Malston in the parish of Sherford in Devon was not however ever held by the Thorber family, according to Pole's own narrative on p.287; However, on his narrative concerning East Ogwell (p.251) he states that Muriel de Thorber, daughter and heiress of Thomas de Thorber, married Robert de Malston, lord of the manor of East Ogwell and of Malston. Their daughter and heiress Elizabeth de Malston married William de Stighull, whose daughter and heiress Margaret de Stighull brought both manors to her husband Walter Reynell. These arms are visible quartered by Reynell in a stained glass window in the "Reynell Dormitory" of East Ogwell Church. |
