Described and illustrated in Rudolf Oldenhourgs Thomas de Keyser,Leipzig, 1911, p. 19. Dr. Oldcnbourg says of this portrait: The jiortrait of a man by Thomas deKeyser, in the Hirsch Collection, New York, is one of the few jiaintinjrs executedin the early days of this master wliich can be attributed to him on tlie ground ofthe Anatomy in Amsterdam, and is of special value on account of its excellentpreservation. Dr. Kurt Erasmus, writing in New York on November 4, 1910, said of thiscanvas: The portrait of a man spoken of in R. Oldenhourgs book, Thomas deKeysers Activities as a Painter, and pictured in the said l)ook, is a very fine workof Thomas de Keyser. It is so natural, and in sj)lendid condition. On November 24, 1910, Dr. W. R. Valentincr wrote: The portrait of a gentle-man is in my opinion a characteristic and fine work by Thomas de Keyser, ofhis early period.

Ioirrirtrr or a lai>) nvFRANCIS( () (iOVA V LIHIKNTHS No. 37FRANCISCO GOYA Y LUGIENTES Spanish: 1746—1828 PORTRAIT OF A LADY C^ Height, 30% inches; width, 24^/2 inches A WOMAN of mature years and marked personality, heavyform and strong features, is depicted at half-length, seatedand facing the observer, her head turned very slightly to theright. She is strikingly clad in bright red, which emphasizesher ample figure, the gown being cut with elbow sleeves whichfinish with white lace and an orange-brown band and whiteundersleeves. Her stout arms fold in front of her, the handsjust overlapping. The brown of the sleeve band is repeatedin ornamental lines leading to the point of the bodice, and thewaist is further adorned by striped and colored laces enfold-ing the shoulders and bust and accentuated by transparentwhite lace revers. Her complexion throughout is of ruddyhue, her eyes are a dark hazel under black brows, and hergray hair of a dark pearl tone is done in a huge puff abouthe
