English: An engraving of English explorer Thomas Cavendish (1560–1592), who was known as "the Navigator" because he was the first to deliberately set out to circumnavigate the globe. The Latin inscription surrounding the bust and map, "THOMAS CANDYSSH NOBILIS ANGLVS ÆTA[TIS] SVÆ XXX", means "Thomas Cavendish, English noble, at the age of 30".
The portrait appears to be based on an earlier engraving (4 1/8 in. x 3 1/8 in. (105 mm x 80 mm)) made c. 1590–1592 in Cavendish's lifetime by Jodocus Hondius, which was purchased in 2004 by the National Portrait Gallery in London (NPG 6677). The Latin inscription of that engraving, "THOMAS CANDYSSH NOBILIS ANGLVS ÆTA[TIS] SVÆ XXVIII", means "Thomas Cavendish, English noble, at the age of 28". That portrait was thus made in 1588, the year in which Cavendish returned from his circumnavigation. The print may have been based on a lost portrait miniature: Thomas Cavendish.
