Description
English: Describes a night out drinking with a group of Bohemians.



Transcription:

[miscella]neous "spree" during the past week, on one occasion setting out at 3 A. M of a muddy muzzly day to walk to Harlem, to take a boat and similar proceedings. [Thad] Glover a little drunk too and talking small lewdnesses, praising dead [William] Levison's capacity for soliciting advertisements &c. From this tavern we went to "the Bank" where [Charles] Gaylor joined us, coming in from seeing Rob Roy at the Metropolitan. Thence to Howells where we found [Frank] Cahill and John Wood, the former drunk and possibly the latter, but as he didn't walk it was not particularly visible. I believe Glover's intention in getting the party hither was to attempt insulting Howell, with whom he has had sundy squabbles. As I sat looking at the faces around me; — Glover's foolish one with his unlovely sensual mouth; Cahill's, wrinkled into exhilarant imbecility by inebriation; Gaylor's heavy coarse, red one; [George] Arnold's, good-looking and flushed with liquor; [Bob] Gun's, eminently sensual but with a look of Scotch solidity; Wood's, flamboyant-whiskerish and inflamed; Tracy's small and shrewd; — as I saw this and listened to the conversation, neither witty, kindly or profitable, wherein the wretched Cahill with an imbecile laugh desecrated the dear name of Christ with an obscene jest, I felt how joyless, how dreary, how mean and low the whole scene was and half hated myself for being there. To think, too, that on Gun, depended my means for paying
