English: Describes the furniture in his boarding house being auctioned off.
Transcription: book, which [Robert] Bonner wouldn’t print, because it contained an illusion to “Silenus Gobb.” I never asked her [Fanny Fern] to do it, though I dare say [James] Parton goodnaturedly suggested it. The “sting” which my viperous nature has inflicted on her “naturally trusting generous heart” merely consists in my not having said a word about her in the Scalpel. Bravo, Fanny! hit him again! I’ll hold your bonnet! 29. Friday. Washed on No 13 and combed my hair in front of 14. The day of sale. Round to Houston St, with drawing materials, having to do a big cut for the Pic, Rawson [Gill] with me, taking temporary possession of Bob Gun’s room. Anon to Mrs [Celina] Jewells, saw her, Selena [Jewell] and Mrs [Cornelia] Sexton, also the latter’s baby — an exceedingly ugly and diminutive one. Out again — a lovely sunny day. Red flag flying at our door. Turned out by 1 1/2 round to 132 Bleecker. The auctioneer presiding in our dining parlor, selling up all the familiar things. Mrs Carpenter, Mrs [Catharine] Potter’s sister buying up a good many; among the ugly, shabby, repulsive people present she seemed the only lady. I liked the woman’s pluck. Both sisters have a brave streak in them. That daughter of a she-dog, Anna Bradbury, was about everywhere whispering “That’s Mrs Potter’s sister!” Mrs P. herself did not appear, being in the little room abutting on the “garden,” with, I think, Mrs [Elizabeth] Gouverneur and Miss [Lucia] Cooper. [Jesse] Haney had been present for a short time Title: Thomas Butler Gunn Diaries: Volume 10, page 208, April 28-29, 1859 |
