29. Saturday. Sander carried down by his friend Mercer into conveyance, destined to Almshouse. /I went to New York, Chamber [Chambers] Street, and saw Mr Greatbatch. Called on Warren Butler, and Hawkins.

30. Sunday. Fine frosty mornings walk to Bergen Rocks, with Hughie [Muir] and [Bill] Collinson. Evening I went to New York for a bit of a stroll up Broadway and by the Park. John Rankin in our room, narrating the deviltries of his apprentice-shop, horse-driving nocturnally, waggon-lifting on barns, boat-stealing for a time, orchard-pilfering, vitriol-squirting over dress of unpopular girls, and similar amusements.

31. Monday. Work on “Mose [among the Britishers].” Two “Examiners” from England. Evening turned out for a bit with Hughie, he expecting two brothers per rail, for New Year’s day. Didn’t come. Back — and Collinson coming sat up singing till an hour beyond midnight, fairly seeing the old year out. / Yet this is scarce the right way — I neither would laugh or cry it in — but think it in.
