Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Mentions the removal of Herr Sander to an almshouse and a New Years Eve celebration with Hugh Muir and Bill Collinson.

Transcription:

still; only an old woman attendant. He [Herr Sander] sends in to me asking me to appeal to Mrs. H [Mrs. Haun], not to turn him out till to-morrow. Then he will have somewhere to go to. I do so. / They, I believe have pity for the poor fellow, but dread of boarders leaving — loss of dollars, dollars, dollars commands the inhumanity. Heaven helps the poor fellow — to lie ill, in a foreign county, at the mercy of strangers or chance sympathy —

29. Saturday. Sander carried down by his friend Mercer into conveyance, destined to Almshouse. /I went to New York, Chamber [Chambers] Street, and saw Mr Greatbatch. Called on Warren Butler, and Hawkins.

30. Sunday. Fine frosty mornings walk to Bergen Rocks, with Hughie [Muir] and [Bill] Collinson. Evening I went to New York for a bit of a stroll up Broadway and by the Park. John Rankin in our room, narrating the deviltries of his apprentice-shop, horse-driving nocturnally, waggon-lifting on barns, boat-stealing for a time, orchard-pilfering, vitriol-squirting over dress of unpopular girls, and similar amusements.

31. Monday. Work on “Mose [among the Britishers].” Two “Examiners” from England. Evening turned out for a bit with Hughie, he expecting two brothers per rail, for New Year’s day. Didn’t come. Back — and Collinson coming sat up singing till an hour beyond midnight, fairly seeing the old year out. / Yet this is scarce the right way — I neither would laugh or cry it in — but think it in. Farewell old
