Description
English:

Photo of a carved bone spoon, accompanied by the word "spun" and its translation.

This word is an example of an English word that became part of Chinuk Wawa: “spun” which means “spoon,” and has the same pronunciation. This spoon, found by archaeologists in the area of the Fort Vancouver Village, was likely made or owned by a Native person living there. It is carved from animal bone (probably cow or elk) and was used for serving food or eating. People living in the fort's employee Village often bought items from the fort's Sale Shop, but artifacts like this one show that they also made their own household goods from materials like wood, horn, bone, and reeds or grasses. The ornate, scalloped edges of the handle show that this spoon was intended to be both useful and beautiful.
