Description
English:

The mercury deposition sampler sits on top of a rectangular metal cabinet.

This sampler collects rain, snow, and other precipitation as part of the National Atmospheric Deposition Program – Mercury Deposition Network (MDN). Mercury is a toxic pollutant that can be harmful to the health of humans and wildlife. Mercury can enter a park through air pollution from a distant source, such as a coal-burning power plant. Airborne mercury eventually settles in water or onto land. This sampler collects precipitation that will be analyzed for mercury concentration. Once deposited, mercury remains in the environment for a long time and can enter the food chain, increasing in concentration for higher-level predators. This can cause reduced reproductive success, impaired growth and development, and decreased survival for park wildlife.
