Description |
English: A leather traveling case This #MuseumMonday leather traveling case belonged to James MacNaughton. The latch is engraved with "J.M.N/ TIFFANY & CO/ IRON MOUNTAIN/ MICHIGAN", indicating that it was likely acquired when MacNaughton worked in Iron Mountain for the Chapin Iron Mining Company. "Big Jim," as MacNaughton was known, immigrated as a child to the Copper Country from Bruce Mines, Ontario. He began his employment with C&H as a young man, working in the mines from 1879 to 1883. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Michigan, he returned to Calumet and C&H in 1886 as a member of the engineering department. He then moved to the Chapin mining company in Iron Mountain where he later became superintendent. In 1901, he returned once more to C&H as general manager, rising in the ranks over time. He retired as company president in 1941. |
