Description

18 August 2015. The lift is in Tottenham's main library, Marcus Garvey. The printed message continues "We apologise for any inconvenience".

Well actually, the whole library is now "out of order". Because it closed on 30 August 2015. And Haringey Council plainly aren't sincere in their apologies.

In fact the councillors responsible and their PR staff seem smug, self-satisfied, arrogant and closed-minded about the planned closure and the changes they are driving through.

Theoretically, the Library will reopen in six months. The information given to Library Campaigners at a meeting with Haringey staff, was that the six month timetable was set in an attempt to get the work done as quickly as possible. Nothing wrong with that aim. Except that the architects have advised that this is "an ambitious time frame"; and delivering in six months is "a very high risk programme".

I was also told that, at a meeting with local residents, one of the Council's representatives suggested the library will be "gutted". So almost certainly, the truth is that there will be structural changes in the building.

Based on this information and on Haringey Council's own published plans, the official description of the work as a "refurbishment" appears inaccurate if not deliberately misleading.

The changes at Marcus Garvey Library were also mentioned in an official Council news leaflet delivered door-to-door to local homes -- including our own. (Please see below.) It referred to the works as "a makeover". A description that I consider an outright lie.

I've been closely following this latest Haringey Council scandal; meeting and sharing information with the local <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Friends-of-Marcus-Garvey-Library-Haringey/1552265978362877" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Friends of Marcus Garvey Library campaigners</a>.

And adding my own views to the ongoing public debate.
