Summary

[edit]
Description

Did yo know SP (and most railroad) signals were numbered by mile post and another digit. In this photo I can read 6227 on the marker on the signal mask. So the signal is at or beyond MP 622 (622 miles from San Francisco) and the 7 is because the signal is close to 622.7 miles from San Francisco. The other signal, facing the opposite direction is numbered 6226 or 6228. Note, the last digit was even, i.e,. 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8 for northward and eastward and odd for southward and westward.
