Gettys Divisionformed for the assault. This railroad cut was enfiladed by the rebelbatteries on Lees Hill.

Thewater in the river is in a constant state of disturbance made by them.We are about one mile from the enemys batteries, and within four orsix hundred yards, and directly under the muzzles, of our own guns, andare thus exposed to the incessant fire of both.
