Summary
[edit]DescriptionThirlmere from the north. - geograph.org.uk - 503362.jpg |
English: Thirlmere from the north. Sitting in the shadow of Helvellyn, the third highest mountain in England, Thirlmere is 3.75 miles long, 1.2 mile wide and 158 feet deep with a capacity of 900,000,000 gallons. Originally two lakes which were purchased by Manchester City Corporation Waterworks in 1889, the valleys were dammed and the area became one vast reservoir, which was officially opened in 1894. Thirlmere is the second highest lake in the Lake District, after Haweswater, at around 185 metres above sea level. The reservoir supplies Manchester with water through a gravity fed aqueduct system of 96 miles of tunnels, pipes and channels. The water takes about 30 hours to reach its destination. |
