Description

You can see the transformers with people walking by them in this photo. The last time I visited Grand Coulee (circa 1990), I was able to go on a tour of the powerplant. This time we were unable to do so, which was surprising since the visitor center staff sure did not appear very busy. I was told the only way to get on a tour was to take a school group for a visit.

"Between 1967 and 1974, the dam was expanded to add the Third Powerplant. Beginning in July 1967, this involved demolishing the northeast side of the dam and building a new fore-bay section. The excavation of 22,000,000 cu yd (16,820,207 m3) of dirt and rock had to be accomplished before the new 1,725 ft (526 m) long section of dam was built. There are three 600 MW generators and three 805 MW generators. These will need a major overhaul, which may take ten years to complete.

"Grand Coulee Dam is a gravity dam on the Columbia River in the U.S. state of Washington built to produce hydroelectric power and provide irrigation. It was constructed between 1933 and 1942... . It is the largest electric power-producing facility in the United States and one of the largest concrete structures in the world" Source en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Coulee_Dam accessed 20 Nov 2012

While we were at Lake Chelan, we did a very good road trip over to Grand Coulee Dam (and then on to Steamboat Rock and up into the Okanogan area of North Central Washington.
