Description
English: Built in 1950, this Gothic Revival-style building was designed by Louis Baylor Pendleton to replace a previous Baptist Church that had stood on the same site since 1885, which was encased within the present structure. The building is clad in limestone with streamlined and stripped Gothic Revival details, including buttresses, gothic arched panels and bays, a bell tower along Washington Avenue with an open belfry, prow oriel windows along the Washington Avenue facade, an overall boxy, blocky massing, aluminum windows, tall bays filled with patterned and ribbed glass block, ribbed spandrel panels, and words carved into the limestone panels of the facade. The building is a contributing structure in the Midtown Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, and remains in use as the home of the Third Baptist Church congregation.
