English: Baums floats for measuring specific gravity. Circular shaped wooden box, which has patterned, raised circles on the top. The lid can be removed to reveal eleven glass floats, which are globular in shape, with a balance below. Each is numbered, with a corresponding paper label next to them. Each float fits into a holes, which is lined with green textile. On the underside of the lid, there is a paper adhesive label, which is marked 'Forbes Altrea, Glassblower & Optician, 162 High Street, Edinburgh, If it be proof the bead will sink to the bottom', this has a chart determining which float should be used for which alcoholic liquid. Specific gravity was used both to determine the alcoholic strength of drinks and to set the taxation to be paid, excise duty, on the drink. It was important that hydrometers could not be made to give false readings and ones like these sealed glass floats would have been more reliable.
