Summary[edit]

Description
Photomicrographs from the same thin section.
English: Scanned image of thin section from Siilinjärvi apatite ore in cross polarised transmitted light.

The thin section can be divided into 3 different domains: the mica rich flow zone, the amphibole rich zone and the carbonate aggregate zone. The sample is clearly oriented, and the mica shear direction is opposite to the amphibole cleavage direction. Opaques are found as accessory minerals, and they are probably mostly magnetite.

Common phlogopite covers half of the thin section area. It is mostly present as large flakes with fine-grained groundmass between them. The matrix composes of tiny elongated mica mash without any orientation. The flakes vary greatly in size, biggest ones are > 4 mm long, but all sizes are present unto < 0.05 mm long laths.

Amphiboles form 25 area-% of the thin section and they occur as large poikiloblastic grains. The largest one is almost 15 mm in diameter. The inclusions include micas, carbonates and apatite. Richterite grains are in companion with carbonates and rather broken. Some bigger euhedral crystals are also found. Amphiboles are present in the flow areas as small euhedral or elongated crystals < 1 mm in diameter.

Carbonates cover 20 % of the thin section area and they mostly occur as large granular mineral aggregates. The grains can be up to 3 mm wide. Smaller pieces can be seen in mica flow zones. Almost all carbonates in the thin section are calcites.

Apatite grains are rounded and they form 5 % of the thin section area. Grains are often 0.5-1.5 mm in diameter and found in contact with amphiboles and carbonates.
