Description

ON THE ROAD TO THIBET.

Our illustration shows a portion of ihe road leading from the Punjaub into Thibet. The view is taken near Pangi. In the distance are seen the snow-covered peaks of the Great Chini. Thibet is a land secluded from the world, and guarded by a double wall of moral and material obstacles. The Government of the Great Llama, jealous of the foreigner, forbids strangers to approach the capital of Lhassa. and enforces its decrees of exclusion by cruel penalties. To the obstacles interposed by man are added the natural difficulties of approach over snow-clad passes fifteen to eighteen thousand feet above the sea. And yet such is the vitality of commerce that in the face of these difficulties a constant communication is kept up between India and the Thibetan Plateau.
