Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Uniformed women stand outside their tents, which are pitched in a wooded area. This is very obviously a posed photograph showing the women looking relaxed and cheerful. It is believed to have been taken by Tom Aitken, and was probably intended for propaganda or even recruitment purposes within Britain. Female volunteers became increasingly vital as the war progressed, particularly in the nursing and administrative fields.

Although the wartime work of women within Britain has been more celebrated, female volunteers also did invaluable work close to the front line. The Queen Mary's Army Auxiliary Corps was just one of a number of British women's corps which served in the nursing and administrative fields during World War I.
[Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT IN FRANCE. Members of the Q.M.A.A.C. encamped in a big forest in France. They have a good time in their leisure hours.']
