Description
English: The temperature scale is in degrees Fahrenheit.

Black Pool is a moderately large hot spring in the Lower Group of Yellowstone's West Thumb Geyser Basin. The irregularly-shaped, moderately deep basin is about 21 x 13 meters in size. The name is in reference to its pre-1991 appearance (see a 1987 photo: www.nps.gov/features/yell/slidefile/thermalfeatures/hotsp...). In the early 1990s, a new geyser appeared from a pre-existing small spring next to Black Pool. On 15 August 1991, an explosion removed material from between the new geyser and Black Pool itself. This was followed by hours of small, short eruptions and heavy overflow into Yellowstone Lake. Black Pool, now enlarged, heated up - this changed the color from greenish-black to greenish-blue. A couple larger eruptive series also occurred in February and March 1992.

In 2000, researchers measured the temperature of Black Pool's water at 73 degrees Celsius (= 163 degrees Fahrenheit), with a pH of about 8.0 (= slightly alkaline).
