Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Theiss-Mueller House, 49 Treehaven Road, Buffalo, New York, August 2022. "Minimal Traditional" is the term used retroactively for the architectural style comprising the small, economical, and mass-producible single-family homes that, during the roughly 25-year period centered on the Second World War, were commonly built (often with the help of Federal Housing Administration-insured loans) in America's newly developing suburbs, and which are especially commonly seen here in the Treehaven (aka "Judges' Row") neighborhood at Buffalo's far northeast corner. Aesthetically speaking, these homes typically consisted of simplified and stripped-down versions of the period-revival styles that were popular among upper-class homes around the same time, tops on the list of which is the Tudor Revival, which is exemplified here by the cross-gabled roof (and particularly the asymmetrical juxtaposition of the two front gables), the ornamental masonry work on the exterior (especially the rusticated stone surround framing the from entrance, and the designs in the brickwork above the door and below the window at right), and the prominent chimney. The house was built in 1948 for German-born butcher William Theiss (1884-1961), who operated a meat market on Jefferson Avenue, but he only lived there for about three years. Longer tenured at the address was salesman John G. Mueller (1903-1965), who stayed until his move to Florida shortly before his death.
