the back, and thetables were hewn out of logs or made of thick planks. The place waswarmed by a stove in one corner, but they were told that stoves were lux-uries not often seen in a lumbermens camp, and most of the cabins wereheated by open fires. A kerosene lamp suspended from one of the raf-ters gave a sufficient light for reading or writing; and as they came intothe room one of the men was engaged in the preparation of a letter forthe benefit of one of his companions who was unable to write. Anotherwas seated close at hand with his rifle; he was the hunter of the estab-lishment, and had just returned from shooting a moose, which wouldkeep the house in fresh meat for several days. The rafters were hung with a variety of garments such as the loggerswear ; they were put there for the double reason that it was an excellentplace for keeping them dry, and there was no other spot for storing them.One rafter was appropriated to stockings, many of them much the worse 118 THE YOUNG NIMRODS.
