The operation of type-setting presents a favorable illustra-tion of the perfection to which the education of the hand maybe brought. But the principle—and sometimes even to a higherdegree—extends to every department of mechanical industry.In this instance the hand works most of the time independentlyof the eye, which loses sight of the hand the instant the fingershave closed upon the type. But there are cases in which thebest-educated hand can do its work only wTith the co-operationof the eye and under its constant supervision. The watch-makers eye must never for an instant lose sight of his fingers.The hand of the engraver can cut the delicate lines upon hisblock or plate only under the superintendence of the eye; andthe variation of a fraction of a hairs-breadth might mar theeffect of the whole work. The two eyes and the two ears, when in a normal con-dition, usually act as one organ and unite in performing a singleact. In the duplex organ of vision the true report is not that ofeither eye, but is made up of the combined report of both. Thetrue position of any object is not that in which it is seen by theright eye or by the left, but is midway between them. The two hands forming, as it were, two individuals, must re-ceive a separate education. The right hand may have beentrained to do a thing perfectly, while the left hand cannot do itat all, or only very imperfectly. A man often writes beautifullywith the right hand, while he can make only an illegible scrawlwith the left.
