While the presidio seemed protected bythe wilderness beyond, the coast lay exposed to athreatening squadron. Attention was, therefore,mainly directed to fortifying Guaymas, as the port ofthe state; to which end the garrison was increased inMarch to four hundred men; a fort was constructedon Casa Blanca hill, and additional guns weremounted.66 On October 16, 1847, the frigate Congress, CaptainLavallette, appeared before Guaymas, followed bythe sloop of war Portsmouth and the prize brig Argo^from which a thirty-two pounder and some smaller armswere landed on Almagre island and another pointunder cover of night.
