Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe wilderness of Tywyn Trewan Common - Madam Wen Country - geograph.org.uk - 773147.jpg |
English: The wilderness of Tywyn Trewan Common - Madam Wen Country This area of gorse (and formerly of forests) and of pools, lakes and rock outcrops has been familiar to generations of Welsh children as "Madam Wen Country". The novel "Madam Wen", was written during WWI by William David Owen (1874-1925) a lawyer who turned to writing when he lost his health. Based on the reputed extra-curricular activities of Margaret Wynne, the wife of the squire of Chwaen Wen, Llantrisant, it tells the tale of smuggling in the Crigyll area. Madam Wen (Wen being the Welsh female form of Wynne) depicted as a robber of the rich and a benefactor of the poor and the leader of a gang of smugglers, is the heroine. The Revenue men are the villains. The novel has been adapted for television on more than one occasion. |
