Young growth is now creeping into every wood lot, while in Pennsylvania, the WhitePine occurred undoubtedly in the lower eastern counties in commercial quantities as well as in tlieadjoining counties of New Jersey, where it begins to be a tree of the mountains, the higher slopes,ridges, and tops becoming its favorite habitat. It is here largely associated with Hemlock, whichoften becomes the preponderant tree. Pure pine growth is rare, but the mixed hardwood forest isseldom without an admixture of White Pine to the extent, as a rule, of about 30 per cent numeri-cally, the soils within the range of its occurrence being seemingly everywhere quite favorable toits growth.
