Governor Hobson,who signed that important document, soon recognisedthat the Bay of Islands was not so well adapted for thesite of a capital as the bay in which we are now lyingat anchor. Hither, therefore, he came in a smallvessel called the Anna Watson^ and after a good deal ofnegotiation with the local tribe he succeeded in pur-chasing a piece of land, three thousand acres, more orless.
