Governor Hobson,who signed that important document, soon recognisedthat the Bay of Islands was not so well adapted for thesite of a capital as the bay in which we are now lyingat anchor. Hither, therefore, he came in a smallvessel called the Anna Watson^ and after a good deal ofnegotiation with the local tribe he succeeded in pur-chasing a piece of land, three thousand acres, more orless. The price is minutely described in the deed ofsale thus : Fifty blankets, £50 in money, 20 trousers,26 shirts, 10 waistcoats, 10 caps, 4 casks of tobacco,1 box of pipes, 100 yards of gown-pieces, 10 iron pots,1 bag of sugar, 1 bag of flour, and 20 hatchets.
