F. collaris, vuile. a more or less distinct collar of chestnut round the lower neck ; breast and abdomen white,abruptly defined anteriorly against the black of the jugulum, but changing insensibly into the blackon the crissum, through a graduated barring or transverse mottling of white and dusky; sideswhite, delicately undulated with grayish dusky. Axillars and lining of the wing immaculatewhite. Bill lead-color, with a narrow basal and broad subterminal band of bluish white, the endblack; iris bright yellow; legs and feet pale slaty. Adultfemalt : Crown and nape dull darkbrown, becoming gradually lighter below ; rest of the head paler and grayer, the anterior half ofthe lores, the chin, throat, and foreneck nearly or quite white ; jugulum, sides, and flanks, deepVOL. II. — 4 26 LAMELLIROSTRAL SWIMMERS — ANSERES.

fulvous or raw-umber brown ; breast and abdomen white ; anal region dull brown, longer feathersof the crissuni whitish ; wings as in the nude ; remaining upper parts dull dark brown, the feathersof the back narrowly tipped with fulvous. Bands on the bill narrower and less distinct than in the male ; iris yellow ; feet slaty. Total length, about 16 to IS inches, extent,24 to 27; culmen, 1.75-2.00 ; tarsus, 1.30-1.45 ;middle toe, 2.00-2.15.
