They fled, but were slainat Stone soon aftcrwaixls, by the Kings order. In due time a reconciliation tookplace between the saint and the heathen father. St. Chad is said to have thenerected a rude church or chapelry, of earth and wood and stone, at the westernsite of the present Stowe church. Fifty years afterwards his body and thatof Ccolrcd the king were interred in the new church which the bishopHedda made. Up to the period of the Reformation his body was enshrinedin the cathedral church, and the shrine was the daily resort of many pilgrims.
