XIX they traded largely with Iceland), presents to thosewho approach the enquiry in the spirit of seekinghow the commutation of the word can possibly beexplained, instead of how it cannot be, a very reason-able explanation of the difficulty; but as it has beenobjected by some, that Columbus may have pickedup the name from Zeno, it is necessary to state thatnot only were the three men; Nicolo Zeno, senior,of the close of the fourteenth century; ChristopherColumbus, of the close of the fifteenth century ; andNicolo Zeno, junior, the editor of his ancestors workin the middle of the sixteenth century; perfectly in-dependent of each other personally, but no one ofthem had the means of knowing the name as comingfrom any other of them.
