Title |
The view from a base of a cast copper alloy domed thimble, dating to the 15th/ 16th century AD. |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy domed thimble with substantial remains of fabric inside, dating from the 15th/ 16th century AD (length/ height: 23.6mm; diameter at base: 20.8mm; thickness of wall at base: 1.2mm; weight: 5.03g). Apart from a hole at the top of the thimble and some areas of bronze disease at the base, the artefact is complete with a large area of closely woven fabric attached to the top of the thimble, which is in very good condition. The thimble has a slightly protruding undecorated rim around the base and had small irregular punched holes running around the outside in well-formed lines, which finish just below the undecorated and slightly conical-shaped tip. The artefact is slightly worn and in a fair condition with a dark green patina. The fabric is particularly good condition. Similar examples are illustrated in E. F. Holmes' 'Sewing Thimbles', Finds Research Group 700-1700 Datasheet 9. It is suggested by Holmes that domed shaped thimbles are found in Britain in contexts from about 1350, which is later than on the Continent where thimbles are known to have been made during the 13th century. It is possible that leather guards were used in preference to metal ones. The casting of domed thimbles was abandoned in the 16th century AD. |
