Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe upper pit of the Lower Glynrhonwy Quarry - geograph.org.uk - 315624.jpg |
English: The upper pit of the Lower Glynrhonwy Quarry This is the highest, deepest and largest of the three Lower Glynrhonwy pits. When both the Upper and Lower Glynrhonwy quarries were working (up to 1930) their contiguous linear nature along a rising slope meant that they were self draining, the whole system being linked by tramway and drainage tunnels. The collapse of the tunnels led to the formation of a deep lake at the bottom of this pit. A major operation to render safe thousands of tons of unexploded bombs dumped into the lake necessitated its drainage during the 1970s.
