Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The upper parts of the Tyllau Duon Slate Quarry. This quarry is particularly interesting in its layout, situated as it is on a sheer cliff face. In this photo a series of workings can be seen in the upper cliff face. Finished slate and waste was transported from the site by ship, the waste to be dumped off-shore. In the middle working, the waste was disposed of down a shaft, still open and unprotected, into a man-made cave at the base of the cliff which small vessels could enter at high tide. The north working, which lacked a proper loading point, was linked to the middle working by means of a cutting. The southern workings had its own loading area - a shelf cut into the cliff face, though waste was moved through a rubbish tunnel to the downward shaft of the middle working. There were also a number of now collapsed copper mining tunnels. THIS IS A HAZARDOUS SITE. Access to the quarries was by wooden ladders from the clifftop. These have long disappeared, leaving only deadly drops.
