Again the poor girls face was wet with tears.She was left at home alone, while the otherswent off in fine clothes, with plenty to eat anddrink, for a day of merrymaking. While weeping thus, a huge black cow camealong and out of its great liquid eyes seemed tobeam compassion upon the kitchen slave. She heard a whir and a rush of winss. PIGLING AND HER PROUD SISTER 91 wonderful brute out over the meadows into thewoods, where she found the most delicious fruither eyes ever rested upon. She tasted and en-joyed, feasting to the full and then returnedhome. When the jealous stepsister heard of the as-tonishing doings of the black cow, she deter-mined to enjoy a feast in the forest also. So onthe next gala-day she stayed home and let thekitchen drudge go to see the royal parade. Pig-ling could not understand why she was excused,even for a few hours, from the pots and kettles,but she was still more surprised by the giftfrom her stepmother of a rope of cash to spendfor dainties.
