Tbe Tilar or Talar, the mostcopious river in tbis part of Mazanderan, receives its first affluents not from, thenorthern but from the southern slopes, rising on the Khing plateau at an altitudeof 9,500 feet, and after collecting a large niunber of head-streams, forcing its waythrough a gorge in the Elburz range northwards to the Caspian. This defile isflanked on the east side by the Nezwar, a lofty peak rising to a height of 13,200feet, and almost completely surrounded by affluents of the Talar.
