Accordingly he bought a quantity of old red-eye and made for the jail with the condescen-tion of a monarch he invited the prisoner tosmile with him. Smile followed smile andthey began to grow dear to each other in thesympathy of one great cause. The jailor sug-gested a perambulation about the town and theprisoner acquiesced. The next tableau in this phase of manifestinterrelation came to a tapis when a messengerinformed the selectmen that the jailer and hisprisoner were in a state of ossification in thesuburbs. Further comment is superfluous. The scribe was told a quaint incident inwhich a justice figured. It seems that over atSconset a number of burglaries had been com-mitted.
