Description |
English: Watercolour of Safdar Jang's tomb from 'Views by Seeta Ram from Delhi to Tughlikabad Vol. VII' produced for Lord Moira, afterwards the Marquess of Hastings, by Sita Ram between 1814-15. Marquess of Hastings, the Governor-General of Bengal and the Commander-in-Chief (r. 1813-23), was accompanied by artist Sita Ram (flourished c.1810-22) to illustrate his journey from Calcutta to Delhi between 1814-15.
An idealised view of the tomb of Safdar Jang showing the garden and water channel. Nawab Safdar Jang (r.1739-53) was the governor of Awadh during the period of Mughal Emperor Ahmad Shah (r. 1748-54). Safdar Jang's body was moved to Delhi where his son Nawab Shuja ud-Daula (r.1753-75) built a tomb in 1753-54 based on the model of Humayun's tomb. The basic architectural style included a square plan tomb centered in a char bagh garden complex. Inscribed below: 'Suftur Jung's Tomb.' |
