Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe tiny Eglwys y Bedd - geograph.org.uk - 742809.jpg |
English: The tiny Eglwys y Bedd. This edifice, the name of which can be translated as "Church of the Grave", has an interesting history. Sited in the grounds of St Cybi's Church it is said to have been St Cybi's monastic cell. The grave alluded to in the name is that of the 5thC Irish pirate leader Seregei who was killed in a skirmish by the local chieftain Cadwallon Lawhir (Cadwallon of the long reach). This is why the church is also called Llan y Gwyddel (the Irishman's church). In the late 18thC it became Holyhead's first day school. Today, it functions as the parish room. |
